2018 WärneliusMiller Pinot Noir Golden Fleece Vineyard
Tasting Notes
The inaugural vintage of WärneliusMiller Pinot Noir. The Golden Fleece Vineyard was planted by our family in 2015 and inspired a new brand bearing our family name. The intention of this wine is to exemplify the vineyard, varietal and climate in structure, character and tipicity. As with all of our wines, this wine has considerable ageing potential and will be exceptionally long-lived.
A classic Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Aromatics rise alluringly from the glass, opening with ripe mulberry, dark red cherry, androse petal. A delicate tone of pomegranate and spice notes illuminate the palate, followed by a delicate presence of white pepper. Earthy minerality and warm bramlby notes work in tandem lending further depth and complexity to an alluring wine. Threaded by well-integrated tannins crafted to age beautifully for decades.
Vintage
2018 began with a cool winter with normal to average rainfall with spring appearing in late March. Floral set began about three weeks later than the previous with also smaller clusters with less than average crop size. Clusters grew evenly into June, with many more berries per cluster yet remaining small. A cool summer prevailed which allowed for slower metabolism and more intense fruit flavors and tannin structure. Ideal for winemakers! August cooled, with tantalizing foggy mornings and night temperatures dipping into the mid-50s. 2018 developed into a growing season of a century. Our intention is to reveal the tremendous character of our land and soils thru careful clonal selection. Night harvesting began at midnight and the blend is initially chosen in the vineyard.
Golden Fleece Vineyard. After a careful and deliberate search for an estate vineyard in Anderson Valley, Mendocino, we acquired a stunning vineyard site and replanted in 2015. A cool climate appellation comprised of Wolfey / Bearwallo / Casabonne / Wohly series subsoil's offer grand depth and texture allowing varietal complexity. The grapes develop intense flavor over a growing season lengthened by the cooling maritime influence that funnels through the valley. A complex patchwork of clonal selections, each block is organically and regeneratively farmed by our family and crew to its own specific needs.
